Do You Have A Problem With Single Strand Knots or Fairy Knots?

To my surprise a trim did not solve my single strand knot problem, oil rinsing actually did. Yes, oil rinsing was my problem solver for those pesky knotty ends or fairy knots, commonly called because they're so small only a fairy could have tied them. Unfortunately, these knots at the end of our strands are a common issue for those of us with curly, coily, or kinky hair. They are detrimental to our hair's health because they result in damage, breakage, tangles and lead to more knots. In order to know how to prevent single strand knots from happening, we need to find out their root cause (no pun intended lol). IMHO...I think it's because our hair is not properly lubricated. Notice I didn't say 'moisturized'. Moisture is always good for natural hair because we all know dry hair tangles, snaps and breaks but it's not enough to just keep the hair moisturized or hydrated. Hydration is primarily beneficial for the inner workings of the hair shaft, meaning beyond the cuticle. Keeping the hair moisturized will prevent hair problems like split ends and breakage but your hair can reach max hydration and still form single strand knots. In order to prevent single strand knots it's important to keep the ends of the hair lubricated, i.e. coating with a penetrating oil or thick substance (like shea butter). That's where oil rinsing comes in for me. Because I swear once I started oil rinsing they all went away. Now I oil rinse every wash day. I mean it had to be the oil rinsing because a trim didn't work, deep conditioning didn't get rid of them or the few other methods I tried.

Bottom line...you want the individual strands of your hair to be so lubricated that they are too slippery to curl around each other and form knots. You can either incorporate oil rinsing into your hair regimen or add penetrating oils (i.e. coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, and avocado oil) to your ends daily. Start keeping your natural hair moisturized and properly lubricated and you can say 'bye-bye' to single strand knots. Your hair will become more manageable by preventing/reducing the amount of knots you're accustomed to getting. Speaking from experience I know how nerve-racking knotty ends can be. I even stopped getting my hair braided or crocheted because of them. My ends would knot up soooo bad that it didn't matter how much water you sprayed on them in order to comb through my hair, they would still reappear. (Note: there goes the moisture that didn't help). And, you know those African girls don't care about your hair they will just rip it out by combing through it so they can braid it up. I mean, don't get me wrong the style be on point, but my hair tho'! Stop ripping it out of my head!! (Oh wait, sorry just had a flashback) Okay I'm back. So, remember Knowledge is Power, I hope this tidbit helps you like it has helped me. My desire is to make your natural hair journey as simple as possible, so we are not temped to go back to that creamy crack. Peaceeee!
