Being natural for some time now and still learning my hair, I made a list of the top 10 hair tips that have helped me on my natural hair journey.
Natural Hair Tip #1
Get a trim every 6-8 weeks to help prevent breakage, maintain length and healthy hair. By getting a trim this often you will be able to retain length and won't need as much taken off as opposed to waiting months in between trims. You will only need to get less than a 1/4 inch trimmed from your hair or a 'dusting'.
What is a dusting?
Dusting is a hair care practice where less than a quarter-inch is trimmed from the hair. With so little hair trimmed from the head, the gathered clippings resemble dust, hence the term 'dusting'. Dusting is simply an alternative to cutting large amounts of hair on a frequent basis, and it is beneficial to those who are trying to retain as much length as possible and grow long, healthy hair.
Natural Hair Tip #2
Deep condition every wash day. It prevents damage from heat and styling tools as well as helps to replace moisture and vital proteins into the hair shaft. Deep conditioning is also very important for those with damaged, brittle, or color treated hair. Incorporating deep conditioning to your hair care routine will help you maintain healthy hair, prevent damage, promote elasticity and restore natural shine. Make sure your deep conditioner is alcohol, artificial color, mineral oil, petroleum oil, paraben and fragrance free.
Natural Hair Tip #3
Oil rinse, oil rinse, oil rinse. Oil rinsing is a technique used to lock moisture in ones hair while in the process of washing and conditioning. It is usually done with one of three oils—olive, coconut or avocado—because they penetrate the hair shaft.
You know those little, annoying knotting ends a lot of us naturals get? Well oil rinsing will get rid of that problem. The reason we have knotty ends is because our hair needs moisture, especially to our ends because they've been with us the longest and tend to get really dry. Oil rinsing makes our hair more manageable and helps with moisture retention, reduction/elimination of single strand knots, detangling and enhancing the natural shine of your natural hair.
It's a must do BooBoo...just thought I'd add that.
Natural Hair Tip #4
Where a satin bonnet or use a satin pillowcase (or both) at bedtime. You definitely do not want to use a cotton pillowcase because it can cause friction between your hair and the cotton fibers. The cotton also absorbs moisture from your hair leaving it dry and frizzy. A satin bonnet or pillowcase will protect your hair from breakage. It will also help keep your hair frizz-free and moisturized.
Natural Hair Tip #5
Give yourself frequent scalp massages to increase blood circulation to the hair follicles for healthy hair growth. Increased circulation means that the cells of the hair follicle will receive more of the nutrients necessary for optimal hair growth. Which is why the inversion method is said to work such great magic. You can use a scalp massager or your finger pads will work just fine. Use a mixture of your favorites oils (i.e. coconut oil, castor oil or olive oil). Jojoba is a good choice as well since it closely resembles our scalp's natural oil, sebum. Whatever concoction you choose I would recommend that castor oil be included.
Pinch your scalp very quickly and lightly with your finger pads. Massage lightly and rhythmically without rubbing. FYI: Your finger pads are not the same as your finger tips. They are just below the tips of your fingers.
